What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from the socket in the jaw bone. While it is always preferable to save a natural tooth, there are a number of reasons why a tooth extraction may be needed.
Reasons for a Tooth Extraction
Sometimes a tooth may be too badly damaged and will need to be removed by your dentist. Typical cases include:
- Excessive tooth damage as a result of severe decay or injury
- Infected tooth nerve that cannot be repaired with a root canal
- Loosened teeth caused by advanced gum disease
- Preparation for other procedures such as the application of dentures
- Problematic wisdom teeth
Wisdom Tooth Extractions
Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that grow in some people between the ages of 17 and 25.
These teeth are not always functional, and can crowd the mouth or create problems for your oral hygiene. In these cases, your dentist may extract the wisdom teeth.
